About DatenUS Energy Data

Every number on this site comes from a U.S. government agency. Here is what each source covers and how we use it.

Units and calculations

  • Electricity prices are in cents per kilowatt-hour (¢/kWh). Utility prices are total revenue divided by kilowatt-hours sold, so they include fixed charges.
  • Average monthly bills are residential revenue divided by residential customers and by 12.
  • Gasoline, diesel, heating oil and propane are in dollars per gallon. Natural gas is in dollars per thousand cubic feet (Mcf).
  • Power plant capacity is nameplate capacity in megawatts (MW). Solar capacity is in alternating current. Generation is in megawatt-hours (MWh), gigawatt-hours (GWh) or terawatt-hours (TWh).
  • Carbon dioxide is in short tons (2,000 pounds). Emission rates are pounds per megawatt-hour of net generation.
  • Cost per million Btu uses EIA heat contents: 138,500 Btu per gallon of heating oil, 91,452 per gallon of propane, 1,036 per cubic foot of natural gas and 3,412 per kilowatt-hour.
  • When EIA does not publish a weekly price for a state, the page shows the regional (PADD) average and says so. We never estimate a state price.

Limits

  • Utility service areas are reported by county. A utility listed for a county may serve only part of it. Ask your utility to confirm service at an address.
  • Charging station details, prices and hours change often. Check the network app or the station before you go.
  • Planned power plant dates come from owners and developers and often change.
  • Values outside a reasonable range, dates in the future and placeholder codes from a source are dropped, and the page shows "Not reported" instead.
